Hannah Joy

Summary

Hannah Joy was Ennui’s wife, Joy’s mother, and a priestess of Attabre. Ennui sacrificed or erased her so that Joy could live, but the act created a paradox: Joy could not exist if her mother had never existed. Hannah was wiped from time and space, yet memories, an invisible figure in the Grand Towers tapestry, and recollections of a moon journey suggest that traces of her may still survive. Her connection to the old mage-school group and to Lady Evalina Hartwall’s work remains important to understanding Joy’s origin and Ennui’s choices.

Known Details

  • Day 44 old-school scenes show Thomas / Ennui with Hannah in detention and later in the Air common room with Browning, Valenth, Brutor Ruby Eye, and the old tower-expedition group.
  • Hannah was described as a priestess of Attabre.
  • Valentinhide held Hannah, said Bright had shown the party too much, and said Hannah should not have been visible because she had been wiped from time and space.
  • After the party returned from the old-school sequence, they no longer remembered Hannah’s name, only an image of her turning to dust in a cave.
  • Day 47 identifies Hannah Joy as Ennui’s erased wife and clarifies that Ennui sacrificed her so Joy could live, but Joy could not exist if her mother did not exist.
  • Day 51 says Ruby Eye remembered Hannah and said there had been six elemental forces all along.
  • Day 56 shows a tapestry with five wizards and an invisible woman who looked like Hannah Joy; Dotharl could not see her either because he did not know who she was or because he knew she existed.
  • Day 57 shows Hannah at a round table with five wizards, Icefang, and angry Lady Evalina Hartwall / Mama Hartwall holding the blue ball and saying the work had to stop.
  • Day 58 says Lord Briarthorn remembered going to the moon with Mama Hartwall, Thomas / Ennui, and Hannah Joy, Francine Joy’s daughter.
  • Day 58 open questions preserve Hannah Joy and the idea that if the party can remember someone, she may not be fully gone.
